Friday, I had an appointment in Iowa City. We missed dinner at the center. On the way, I made a windshield survey of the countryside. In the Amish area north of Kalona on Highway 1, was saw an old fashioned threshing rig set up. It was powered by a steel-wheeled tractor and belt power and beside it was half of a hay rack of grain bundles. There was a small straw stack. There was no activity, but since it was shortly after noon and a very hot day, we assumed the workers were still having dinner and resting. How many of my readers remember cooking for threshers? It was a big neighborhood event, both for the wives who came to help cook and the children who got to come along and play.

Another observation was how good the soybean fields look. Most bean fields are weed free, probably because the farmers have sprayed with some kind of herbicide. With modern technology, sprays can kill about everything but the grain the farmer has planted.

At the center Friday, July 30, Clyde and Ollie Hershberger of Kalona had their son, Herb Hershberger and his wife, Gladene, of Wooster, Ohio, as their guests.

Causing a lot of comment from everybody at the center Monday was the delightful change in the weather Saturday night. We had a little rain Saturday night and woke up to much cooler temperatures Sunday. Although some places are suffering floods and other areas severe drought, in this immediate area, crops look good.

We wish to extend our sympathy to Dorotha Grout upon the death of her husband, Earl. Dorotha is one of our regulars from Kalona on Wednesdays.

Guests were treated to ice cream Tuesday by Todd Snider in honor of her birthday, which was Sunday, August 1.

Alice Goodwin of Kalona brought her sister, Gladys Mayrose of Des Moines, to lunch Wednesday. The ladies also attended Bingo the previous Saturday night.

Wednesday morning, about 25 guests attended the monthly coffee. Heather Fox and Grace Miller furnished home baked coffee cake. If you would like to make a treat for the monthly coffee, contact Bonnie— it would be appreciated.

Thursday, Loretta Yoder had her daughter, Karla Woodson, and granddaughter, Katie Woodson, of Champaign, Illinois as her guests at lunch.
