Friday, July 23, was another hot day, but my sweet corn was ready to freeze, so with the help of my children and grandchildren doing most of the work we froze 60 quart. I felt like the Amish lady who writes the food column…tired, but satisfied. Friday someone reported Paul Snyder from Brighton had lunch at the center and then was going to do some visiting in Wellman.

By Monday my household was back to normal. Since our sweet corn was at its best this past weekend, we took some into the center to share. We have a “sharing” table just inside the dining room door and when people have something to share they put it there. I noticed the table sometimes has ice cream buckets and yesterday some large glass jars.

Monday, Bernice Commers brought her granddaughter, Amber Ford of Wellman, to lunch. Amber recently celebrated her 16th birthday and now has her drivers license and a job. Congratulations Amber, a 16th birthday is a “big” event in a teenagers life.

It’s still very hot Tuesday although this immediate area has gotten several good showers which has kept it humid, but good for the crops. I even saw a sign at a local motel saying “Welcome; it’s too hot to change the sign.”

The second and forth Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Bonnie opens the center for a video movie. Last Tuesday she showed “Free Willie III”. Slagles Drug Store furnishes the video. She plans to continue the videos through August. Bonnie would welcome suggestions on that you’d like to see, so take advantage of a free movie and a cool place to spend the evening. Saturday night Bingo is also a good place to spend a cool evening.

Wednesday, there were 46 guests served in the dining room and Russ and Betty Kempf delivered 12 meals to homes. We had pork cutlet which is very good. Bernice Commers treated the group to ice cream in honor of her birthday which was July 28.

It was still hot and it was pleasant to step into the cool dining room and lounge. I would like to recognize some of our volunteers who help clean up after lunch. Eve Phillips, Todd Snider, and Lorene Schlabaugh usually wash, dry, and put away the serving dishes. Grace and Gladys Miller and Margaret Miller are also regular helpers. I ran the dishwasher, while Bonnie and Sid directed and put away the food. Believe me the kitchen is not nearly as cool as the dining room and lounge. With such good help the kitchen crew is usually through by shortly after 1 p.m.

I made my debut at the center Wednesday with my newly grown hair, which is about one half inch long…it looks like it’s going to come in just like it was before my chemo. I find it very hot and uncomfortable to wear a head covering and people were very understanding…thanks.

Bonnie and Heather have invited guests to bring a thought for the day to share before lunch. We had some very good ones…keep them coming.

Thursday there was again sweet corn to share. The extremely hot weather has caused the sweet corn to mature faster than a normal year, but we have enjoyed corn everyday for 2 weeks. Bernice Commers brought a bouquet of “store bought flowers” to share, presented to her for her birthday by the Farmers Saving Bank.
