The Lone Tree bats needed no time to warm up on opening day at Winfield Mt. Union on Tuesday.

The Lions put the first five batters on base and scored four runs in the first inning of a 10-4 victory over the Wolves.

Cade Shield was 2-4 with a double and four RBIs in the win and Will Kleckener also had two hits. Adam Knock scored three runs on four walks and a triple and Matthew Hemsted drove in a pair of runs in the opener.

Kleckner, Gavin Pourroy and Joe Boxwell combined to allow two hits while striking out 11.

WMU 6, Lone Tree 5

The Lone Tree softball team was in position to snap an eight-game losing streak to WMU, with a 4-0 lead in the middle of the fourth inning. But the Wolves came back with three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to edge the Lions 6-5.

Trailing by two runs in the seventh inning, Lone Tree pulled within a run with three straight singles. An Ella Buser single scored Arlie Lorack and put Kinley Hayse in scoring position, but WMU sophomore Makiah Lower was able to get the final outs to escape with the win.

Buser finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Lorack was 3-4 with two RBIs.

Ellen Carow had a pair of hits and scored twice and Kayleigh Rundlett had a triple.
