Mid-Prairie pitcher Karson Grout knew the runs would come.
But he pitched a shutout anyway Tuesday night, along with some relief help from Collin Miller.
A 4-0 victory by Mid-Prairie over Cardinal advances the Golden Hawks to their third consecutive Class 2A district final. Mid-Prairie (16-10) will host Van Buren County (12-15), which knocked off district host Mediapolis, 8-7, in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.
“With this team, at some point we’re going to put runs on the board. And four in a game like this is plenty,” said Grout, a University of Iowa commit whose pitches top 90 mph. “I have enough confidence in myself on the mound and then my team behind me, and whoever we have in the pen to shut them down. A game like this, I knew we were going to step up.”
“Karson pitched one heck of a game,” Golden Hawks head coach Kyle Mullet said.
Ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning, Cain Brown drove home a run with a single and then Dylan Henry scored on a delayed double steal for a 3-0 Golden Hawks lead.
“Crucial hits at the right time,” Mullet said. “We still need to get our offense going. We’ve got to be able to produce more hits. We’ve got to have more power there offensively to score some more runs and get some more comfortable leads.”
Grout and Miller combined for a 2-hit shutout, striking out 10 Cardinal batters. Twice, they worked out of bases-loaded jams.
The shutout was Mid-Prairie’s second of the season and the first in the district tournament since a 10-0 victory over Regina Catholic last year.
