Around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, local volunteer fire departments responded to a call for a structure fire on Orval Yoder Turnpike SW, northwest of Frytown. Siren song filled the air in Kalona, prompting The News to drive out to the scene.
No smoke was visible in the sky, and upon arrival, several vehicles from Kalona, Riverside, and Wellman volunteer fire departments, as well as Johnson County ambulance and sheriff’s offices, were departing the area.
The News spoke to the homeowner from her upstairs window.
“My toaster malfunctioned. I had a slice in and I forgot it, but it didn’t pop up. The toaster is on the front steps. It was just pouring smoke out and I didn’t know where it was coming from,” she explained. “So that’s all it was. The toaster’s got to be thrown away because it malfunctioned.”
No damage to the dwelling was incurred, and no one was injured in the incident.
