LONE TREE

On a day accompanied by plenty of wind, the Highland track and field teams took a trip to Lone Tree to compete in the Mike Kautz Invitational last Monday.

It was a strong outing for both teams as the Highland girls scored 82 to place fourth and the Highland boys placed 5th with a score of 31. Taking the team title on the girls side was Louisa-Muscatine (149) and Columbus (237) won the boys team title.

The Highland girls stacked quality performance after quality performance in the relay races.

It was a runner-up finish in the distance medley (5:30.19) and in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:21.15), a pair of third place finishes in the 800m sprint medley (2:06.53) and in the 4x100m relay (55.97), and a fourth place finish in the 4x200m relay (2:05.98).

In the individual events, Mayia Singbeil gave Highland its lone first place finish of the night.  Singbeil ran and jumped across the finish line the fastest in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:15. The freshman also earned a runner-up finish (18.46) in the 100m hurdles.

Another freshman earning top five finishes for Highland was Grace Bombei. Taking on long distance events, Bombei was the runner-up (6:29.54) in the 1500m and finished fourth (3:03.49) in the 800m.

When it came to third place finishes a trio of Huskies fit that bill. Kamryn Fink in the 100m (14.58), Alexa Hahn in the long jump (13-09), and Chloe Sexton in the shot put throw (29-11.71) all claimed third in their respective events.

On the boys side their lone first place finish of the meet came by way of relay.

The quartet of Liam Roberts, Bryce Hazelett, William Dunbar, and Cayden Day out ran the competition to finish first in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:41.19.

Dunbar also impressed in the 100m by placing third in 12.54. In the same event teammates Cayden Day and Brody Beinhart placed eight and 12th respectively with times of 13.64 and 14.12.

Caleb Wheeler showed off his wheels in the 200m by coming away with a fifth place finish in 26.46. Fellow Huskies Brixton Rust and Chase Robinson also competed in this event, finishing with times of 29.93 and 34.60 respectively to place 12th and 15th.

In the 400m, Elvin Hernandez finished in the top ten by ending with a time of 1:00.73 to place seventh. Wheeler also raced in this event as the freshman placed 11th in 1:0891.

Tristan Kleopfer took part in a couple of long distance events, placing fifth (3:00.55) in the 800m and placing seventh (6:27.35) in the 1600m. Jackson Robinson also gave Highland a sixth place finish (3:05.91) in the 800m.
