The Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) Coalition and Iowa State University (ISU) will host a field day, Friday, August 27, at the ISU Bruner Research Farm near Ames.
The event will be an unique opportunity to attend in-the-field presentations showcasing SCN resistance breeding research, SCN seed-treatment, and other research conducted by Dr. Greg Tylka, Iowa State University nematologist, related to soybean response to SCN.
"Research indicates that 70 percent to 80 percent of all soybean fields are infected with SCN," says Dr. Tim Cupka, SCN Regional Education Coordinator. "This field day is an opportunity for producers to learn how to test for and manage SCN. In addition, seed companies will be on hand to answer questions about specific soybean varieties, and make recommendations for producers."
During the field day, speakers and poster sessions will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon, and repeated from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be available at the site.
"Producers are encouraged to bring soil samples to the event," says Cupka. "We will take the soil to ISU, and for a minimal fee, get the samples tested for SCN."
