For Mid-Prairie Middle School students aluminum pop tops “buys” them some privileges and aids a charitable service.
Students in the school’s Sustained Silent Reading and Writing (SSRW) groups will collect pop tops through March for the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.
The tops will be collected and weighed by student council members weekly, and the group which collected the most for the week receives a prize. At the conclusion of the contest, a grand prize will be awarded to the “top” SSRW group.
Each student received a small cardboard house in which to collect the tabs at home. The aluminum tabs are sold to recycling facilities by the McDonald House management.
Weekly prizes are first in lunch line (January 28, February 25, March 29); tardy pass (February 5, March 5); hat pass (February 12, March 12); gum pass (February 19, March 19). The grand prize, March 31, is breakfast served to the winning SSRW group.
