Supervisors oppose Iowa's six-week abortion law

IOWA CITY

After the Iowa State Legislature passed a six-week abortion plan in a special legislative session last week, and it was signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors reacted loudly.

“This is a violation of our fundamental rights,” Supervisor V Fixmer-Oraiz said during the board’s work session July 12. “To just have our own body. When it comes to reproductive health, clearly we’re in this moment right now. … It’s definitely an attack on body autonomy in general.”

“We’re all frustrated to see the impunity that the legislature exercises and the hypocrisy that we sit here quivering, worried about the state,” Supervisor Jon Green of Lone Tree said.

The Board is in the process of drafting a formal resolution in opposition to the new law.

The law bans most abortions at six weeks and is effective immediately, although it does face a challenge in state court.

“They don’t want people to have control of their own bodies,” Fixmer-Oraiz said. “That’s what it boils down to.”

Rezoning Approvals

A rezoning and platting for a property on 500th Street SW, located west of Frytown, was among the rezonings and property requests approved by the Board of Supervisors at its July 13 formal session.

A portion of the property, known as Brenneman Acres, was rezoned from agricultural to residential and a 1.65-acre piece of land was approved to be platted as Lambs Ear Lane. The changes were made so that the Brenneman family could split off a piece of the property to other family members.

The Board also approved the Murphy rezoning, from agricultural to residential, on a 1.91-acre property located off Murphy Lane SW and northeast of Sharon Center, and approved the Eads rezoning, from agricultural to residential, on a 1.99-acre property located south of 475th Street SW and northwest of Hills.

Board Action

The Board approved more than $260,000 in service agreements, including $41,300 to the Johnson County Agricultural Association for the upcoming Johnson County Fair and $85,000 to the Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) group.

The Board held a public hearing, then approved, on first reading, a number of changes to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance.

Next board meeting: The board will hold its next formal meeting at 1:30 p.m. July 19.
