By Mark Swartzendruber

Wasn’t that a dandy rain? We are thankful for that and hope for more yet before cold weather.

Our sympathies go to the Duane E. Yoder family in Duane’s death recently. Duane will be remembered for his help in the Optimist Club, his church and community. Not only that, but for the sales in the B-4 Building. We’ll miss watching him get on the ladder on the outside and put the dates up on his sign.

John Hostetler, here is one for you. Dimp - a person who insults you in a department store by asking, “Do you work here?”

My nephew and his wife read these lines out in San Francisco, California. Doug and his wife Gail come to spend Thanksgiving in the Wilbur Swartzendruber home. The average temperature in San Francisco has been 68-70 high and 40 low at night.

Darrell Showalters spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Des Moines with their sons and family members.

Did you get to hear the “Elizabeth Hopkins Celebrates Thanksgiving” one-person drama? This was given by Lois Gugel and she was dressed as a neat Puritan lady.

Did you see John Carpenter on TV who won a million dollars without any help? He works for the I.R.S. On the last question he did call his father and said, “I’m going to win a million dollars tonight.” I think he is the only one who got all the answers on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”

Remember Phyllis Diller? She says and I quote, “Cleaning your house while your children are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.”

The other day there were three dead deer between Wellman and Kalona. I sure hope we won’t need to get out the sharp-shooters as Iowa City has to.

Jim and Ramona Miller entertained the Swartzendrubers and the Grabers and the Millers at the fire station in Wellman bringing salmon and crab meat from Alaska. Jim goes up to Alaska about every summer to fish for several months. A carry-in was also a part of this party.

I was talking to Raymond Yoder from Texas and Delmar Gingerich from Ohio. They came to attend the funeral of Duane E. Yoder. Delmar says he gets the Kalona News and looks up the column for items about Kalona.

Word of the Week

The word for the week is “hauteur”. It means to be puffed up, have pride, a high self opinion. This could be a stage star or person that has the least appealing quality. Not much fun to meet that person and I hope you won’t need to use the word too often.
