For the third year, Hills Bank Kalona has demonstrated that quilting and banking go together like well, a needle and thread.

The quilt that fills the lobby of the bank in downtown Kalona will be donated to Pleasantview Home for its annual Benefit Sale in October.

Since 1997, the bank has arranged for a quilt frame to be set up in June, and extends an invitation to all quilters (beginners, intermediate and advanced) to take time to add a stitch or nine to the work in progress.

This year’s effort is a triple Irish chain quilt top in wine and navy, pieced by Shanna Helmuth and purchased from Stitch ‘N Sew Cottage. Bank employees also found time to quilt along with community volunteers.

The idea originated in 1997 with bank employee Laverta Yoder and that year some 50 or more volunteers worked on the starburst queen size quilt top.

Photo: Working on the 3rd annual quilting project at Hills Bank Kalona were Luella Yoder, Elsie Gingerich, Mamie Miller, Elva Miller, Leta Schneider and Laverta Yoder. The finished quilt will be donated to the Pleasantview Home Benefit Sale held at the Kalona Sales Barn in October.
