Mid-Prairie had three wrestlers finish on top of the podium at New London in their first weekend tournament of the year.
Cory Allen, Cael Garvey and Isaac Boucher each won their bracket on Saturday. Allen and Garvey had to upset ranked opponents to earn the win.
“I saw those two wrestle to their potential and it was good to see them wrestle well against good opponents. It has us excited,” Mid-Prairie coach Justin Garvey said.
Allen moved to 7-0 on the season with a 9-7 decision over Class 1A No. 9 at 182 pounds Gavin Holmes of New London.
“Cory came out and just ground it out for six whole minutes,” Garvey said. “He got a near fall to win the match and just really gutted it out.”
A late takedown tied the match at 7-7, but Allen was able to get the late two-count to win the match.
In the 170-pound bracket, Garvey upset Class 1A No. 10 Chase Kruse of Louisa-Muscatine by pinning him in the second period. Garvey is up a weight class this season and is out to a 6-1 start this year.
Isaac Boucher pinned both opponents he faced in the 195-pound bracket to win the tournament.
Mid-Prairie’s Gannon Callahan lost 8-4 in the finals to Louisa-Muscatine’s Gabe Hayes, but Garvey said it was a big step for Callahan in terms of confidence. Down 6-4 with seconds left, Garvey applauded him taking a chance and going for the tying shot while both wrestlers were tired. Hayes was able to turn it into two more points and the 8-4 win.
Vinnie Bowlin nearly upset his way into the finals at 160 pounds. He lost a 2-1 decision to Gabe Carter of New London. Carter is ranked sixth at 160 pounds in Class 1A.
“It’s good to see him wrestle tough against a state qualifier from last year. There’s lots of times to work on things,” Garvey said.
Bowlin ended up finishing third at 160 pounds.
Josh Wallington finished third at 220 pounds and Ben Meader was third at 182 pounds.
Mid-Praire was second in the team race, taking runner-up to New London. The Tigers had 178 team points and MId-Prairie had 157.
Mid-Prairie’s next tournament will be their home tournament on Saturday.
