While there are many conveniences associated with shopping online, there also are important security and privacy issues that you should consider. Before you hit the cybermall, the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants recommends that you take the following steps:
• Make sure your browser is secure. Most computers today come with a secure browser already installed. If your computer is older, look for a padlock symbol or similar icon at the bottom of your browser screen, or check with the software manufacturer.
• Also, be cautious about the personal information you provide. Never release information such as your Social Security number or bank account numbers to make an online transaction.
