The first community in Iowa to be officially declared Y2K compliant is tiny Dublin in Washington County. In fact, Dublin is the first community in the nation to be assured that none of its equipment or services will fail when the clock ticks into 2000.

Dublin, once a town of several hundred, has a single building, the one-time general store where Monday State Senator Mark Shearer presented an “official” letter of certification to Robert Bell and Gary Murphy declaring that Dublin, Iowa is fully and totally prepared to enter the 21st Century. In fact, the last piece of equipment to pass muster was the cash register, converted back to its manual power mode. Probably a necessity since the building does not have electricity.

Dublin comes back to life March 13 when its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is held, starting at 2 p.m. A dinner will follow at the Ainsworth Opera House at 6 p.m. featuring Irish food and entertainment. Dinner is by reservation only.
