RIVERSIDE

Trek Fest and the Voyage Home Riverside History Museum won a combined $33,000 in grants that were approved April 18 by the Riverside City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting.

The Riverside Area Community Club received a $18,000 grant to run Trek Fest, which is scheduled for June 24 and 25 in Riverside. The festival will feature two days of events and is a major part of Riverside’s sesquicentennial celebration of its 150th year.

The fund request for Trek Fest was one of three Hotel/Motel Grants approved by the City Council.

The Riverside History Museum, located on Highway 22 and featuring a number of Star Trek displays and collectibles, received a grant of $15,000. The museum is undergoing a new look and among the new additions will be a quilt featuring multiple Star Trek T-shirts in a block pattern. The quilt was created by Angie Miller of Lone Tree.

The council also approved a $4,000 grant for Paws & More Animal Shelter.

An additional $4,000 grant request for summer events in Hall Park was tabled so that each event could be handled individually as they were scheduled. Separate requests will come to the council for consideration for each event.

Funds for the grants come from a hotel and motel tax in Riverside. The program was initiated in 2006.

As plans come together for the city’s sesquicentennial celebration and the annual Trek Fest event, the improvement project at Railroad Park is progressing quickly. Axiom Consultants of Iowa City gave an update on the project to the council. Sidewalk paving is underway with the playground surface and swings soon to arrive.

The Railroad Park improvements will include a Star Trek-themed playground area surface and the addition of parking spaces around the park. The grand re-opening of the park is scheduled for Trek Fest weekend in June and former Council Person Jeanine Redlinger has been invited to cut the ribbon at the ceremony. Redlinger played a leading role in pushing for the new playground surface while she was in office.

The project may be completed in May.

The city has applied for a $200,000 grant from the Washington Country Riverboat Foundation to help with the Railroad Park cost.

The council approved a new HRV ventilation system to be installed at City Hall. The new unit will cost $6,816. City Council Chambers is already undergoing work to have mold removed.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the City Council will be May 2 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
