KALONA
On Friday morning, the Vista Park Pond in Kalona’s Southtown Recreational Area will be stocked with 1,500 rainbow trout, something city administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said is super popular.
“I’ve probably gotten more questions on this than I have the budget,” he told the city council Monday night at their regular meeting.
The DNR program that brings trout fishing close to home is supported by sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid license and to pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10.
Children aged 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but together they can only keep one daily limit. Or children can pay the trout fee, which allows them to keep their own daily limit.
Vista Park itself is largely complete, with a new splash pad, dog parks, play equipment, restrooms, trails, and athletic fields ready to welcome the public this spring. Schlabaugh discussed plans with the council for a ribbon cutting celebration, scheduled for Saturday morning, May 3, where the community would be invited to enjoy refreshments (including treats for dogs), crafts and other activities, and informative displays. Legislators, WCRF board members, county supervisors, and more would also be invited to the event.
“We’ll put our best foot forward on it,” Schlabaugh said.
With plans underway for a trail system connecting City Park on the north side of Kalona with Vista Park on the south side, more parking will be needed so people have easy access to the trails. To this end, the council approved the installation of a road culvert on S. 14th Street so that an adequate parking area can be established near the English River bridge. The result will be a low-cost “starter park” with visibility, signage, and river access.
In other council action, Mayor Mark Robe read a proclamation officially recognizing April 3 as Junior Achievement Day.
The council approved second and final readings for an ordinance amending speed zones on portions of Nutmeg in Southtown.
The council approved the temporary closure of D Avenue from 6th Street to the crosswalk for the Kalona Home Show on March 28-29.
The Kalona City Council will next meet on Monday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
