Known for its unique and eclectic style, Columns and Chocolate stayed completely in character for its lst anniversary celebration.
The four-day event, September 8-11, will offer everything from drawings for lunches and overnight stays to buggy rides and sneak previews.
Officially, the anniversary is September 10 and that day is reserved as a tasting day, when the mercantile part of the business will have samples of all its gourmet foods, beverages, candies, chocolates (and maybe a surprise or two) for sampling.
For Wednesday, September 8, the program offers a sneak preview of the guest house rooms on the second floor. visitors will be served a sample cup of wassail and tour each room where special chocolates will await. The tours start at 9 a.m. and continue each half hour until 3 p.m. Cost is $3 and visitors are asked not to be accompanied by children.
A Birthday High Tea is set for Thursday, September 9 from 2-4 p.m. It features a special hot tea and fussy little sandwiches, scones and desserts. Not as formal as the normal high teas at the shop, its cost is $7.50 and reservations are not needed because participants will be taken on a first come, first served basis.
Saturday, September 11 will have tours of the guest house rooms from 9 to 11 a.m. (again, please, no children). However, there will be special things for children with a clown doing face painting outdoors. Any child who comes in and says “chocolate” will get a special chocolate and children will eat for 99 cents that day. There also will be special items for children to buy in the mercantile section.
Besides the drawings, the tenth person to eat lunch will do so free. The shop also will have rides in an Amish buggy, offer its special homemade breads for sale and more.
