Washington Board to seek change for Kiwi Avenue

Posted

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Washington County Supervisors approved a resolution to seek adding a portion of Kiwi Avenue from 170th Street north to 155th Street, a total of 1.75 miles, to the Farm to Market System.  The move deleted the same portion from Juniper Avenue.  Both actions were to modify the road system to meet the needs of existing and potentially higher traffic, explained county engineer Jacob Thorius.

Application for modifying both roads will be made to the state and will involve changing the classification for both.

Thorius said they will need to do some road stabilization work for Kiwi Avenue, and there has already been some increase in traffic.

The board also approved a 28E Agreement among Clinton, Iowa, Henry, Keokuk, Lee, Mahaska and Washington counties for the purchase and maintenance of a Weiler W439B Road Widener.  The current price for a widener is $245,000, and as Thorius noted, it is much cheaper for all the counties to share the unit rather than each purchase one individually.

He estimated that Washington would need its use for about one month per year.  Under the agreement, each county shares one-sixth of the total purchase and maintenance costs.

The agreement is for ten years following the equipment purchase, and after that would be automatically renewed every July 1 for one year, unless terminated sooner.
