BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
WASHINGTON COUNTY, IOWA
REGULAR MEETING OF TUESDAY,
MAY 9, 2023
At 9:00 am Chair Bob Yoder called the meeting to order in regular session, Courthouse Chambers. Items on the agenda included: National Association of County Engineers (NACE) award presentation; Secondary Road Use Request Form–American Legion Post 29; personnel change request–County Attorney. Supervisors Jack Seward, Jr., Stan Stoops, Marcus Fedler, and Richard Young were also present.
All motions were passed unanimously by those supervisors in attendance unless noted otherwise.
The Board voted to approve the agenda as published.
Clinton County Engineer Todd Kinney, National Association of County Engineers (NACE), presented County Engineer Jacob Thorius with the 2022 NACE Rural County Engineer of the Year award which is one of only four such awards presented nationally each year. Thorius was recognized for his efforts in reshaping and stabilizing gravel roads in Washington County along with other achievements. Thorius presently serves as the 2023-2024 Secretary-Treasurer of NACE. Thorius has served as Washington County Engineer since January of 2012 and has been very involved with the Iowa County Engineers Association in roles which include membership on the Association’s Executive Board as well as Safety Committee. Thorius has been a member of the Iowa Highway Research Board and since 2019 has served as NACE’s South-Central Region Vice-President. Thorius is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board at the University of Iowa. The Board took no formal action.
The Board voted to approve, and authorize the Chair to sign, a Secondary Road Use Request Form from American Legion Post 29, Washington, for May 29, 2023. On that date American Legion Post 29 will hold a Navy/Marines Memorial Day tribute. The event will take place at the Crooked Creek Bridge on Old Highway 92 at 8:00 a.m.
The Board voted to acknowledge, and authorize the Chair to sign, a personnel change request from the County Attorney’s Office for Interim County Attorney Anthony Janney whose final date of employment occurred May 5, 2023.
During department head comment Thorius shared the recent rain was a benefit to gravel roads in the County and he expressed optimism that annual treatments for dust control on gravel roads could commence sometime during the coming week.
At 9:19 am the Board voted to adjourn.
