Wellman begins fundraising for veterans, first responders memorial

WELLMAN

When the City of Wellman purchased the high-visibility lot on the corner of 8th Avenue and Highway 22 last March – vacant, but for an LED sign – they had an inkling of what they wanted to do with it: establish a veterans and first responders memorial there. Today those plans are starting to take shape.

Although design of the memorial is still being considered, those involved with the project know basically what they would like to see.

“We’re looking for it to be not only a veterans memorial, but also first responders -- fire department, ambulance, sheriff’s department, and communications,” Ryan Miller, Mayor of Wellman, said. “We’d like to have something that kind of sets off our community, as a gateway to downtown here.”

The memorial project is a joint effort of the City of Wellman, Wellman Rotary, Wellman Fire Department, and Wellman Ambulance.

To launch the project, a soup supper will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Parkside Activities Center in the banquet hall from 5-7 p.m., where the community’s freewill donations will go towards the memorial.

A meeting of the organizations involved the week before the soup supper should yield more information that can be shared with supporters at the event, such as ideas for the specific design of the memorial and/or a timeline for completion.

Miller says the idea is that families could purchase bricks or something of the kind that would be engraved with names to honor the community’s veterans and first responders.

“We don’t have anything like that currently, but it would be nice to honor those people who’ve given so much for our community, for our country,” Miller said. “Our veterans, but also we want to tie it into the first responders, because we have so many people that just volunteer in our community, and they don’t get that kind of recognition, so we want to do that also.”

Miller’s hope is that plans will be finalized and fundraising well under way by summer, with completion of the memorial in time for the city’s much-loved Fourth of July celebration in 2026.
