Wellman conducting new survey on North Park activities complex

Wellman residents will be receiving a survey concerning the North Park Activities Complex. The survey must be returned by January 15.

The council will review the survey returns on Monday, January 17, at which time they will vote whether or not to override former Mayor Wilbur Swartzendruber’s veto of the plans and specifications for the complex. Deadline for accepting or rejecting the low bid for the $785,800 project is January 20.

“We want to find out what people think about the project. “I’m going to make the council either kick out the project or press on with completion as proposed,” commented Mayor Max Lewis when asked what he hoped to accomplish by the survey.

Councilman Jim Seward said he didn’t expect the survey to have much influence on the council’s actions. “Three of us were elected because we opposed the project,” he noted. “My survey was the people who elected me, as they knew where I stood (against the project).”

The survey notes that the Wellman Area Foundation has raised funds and the city council has pledged TIF funds for the construction of an activities complex (No property tax will be used to construct the facility). It further states that the Wellman Area Foundation has pledged funds enough to cover the first year’s operation of the facility, thereafter the cost would be borne in part by the city.

The survey does not ask for a yes or no answer for approval of the project as proposed. Questions concern age group of adults answering the survey, number of people in household, what they would spend on a membership, how they would rank certain facilities such as gym, weight room, aerobics room, racquet ball court, meeting room, game room, banquet room and swimming pool.

One question asks: Do you feel an Activities Complex would be beneficial to the long term growth of the community? Yes____No___?

The council added another question: Do you feel there would be more community support for the project if the total project cost did not exceed $500,000? Yes___No___.

The council asked that the surveys be sent out with return postage in order to help increase response by the 15th. Residents have the option of dropping completed surveys off at the city clerk’s office.
