Wellman Heritage Society is the very grateful recipient of a $50,000 gift to be used for repairs and upkeep of the one-room Smith Creek country school, now located at Wellman Heritage Park on 7th Avenue.
The gift came from Julie Foster Van Camp of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Her grandmother, Hila Jones Foster, once taught at Smith Creek and her father, Dr. Morgan Foster, and his brothers, Burrell, Dr. Wayne, Ellery and Dr. Warren Foster, also received their elementary education.
This timely gift will help with needed roof repairs and general maintenance, enabling the school to be open for tours in the summer of 2022.
