Former Wellman Rotary exchange student Shirley (Boyton) Swantz and her husband, Pete, of Cape Town, South Africa visited the club this past Wednesday.
Swantz spent a year with the Wellman Rotary and was a student at Mid-Prairie High School in 1984.
July 14
The annual club assembly was chaired by new president Mark Schneider. Plans were made for the coming year and for the District Governor’s visit October 27.
Committee chairpersons at the meeting were appointed. They are Dr. Teri K. Downes (club service), Bob Freeman (community service), James F. Palmer (vocational service) and Steve Berger (international service).
Community service projects were featured. Projects planned for the coming year are securing land for a community soccer field (Freeman, Downes and Bill Kinneer head the committee), continue funding the Renaissance Program in the Mid-Prairie School District, sending two Mid-Prairie High School sophomore students to Des Moines for the third annual Rotary Youth Leadership conference, holding another smoked chop fundraiser and sponsoring another blood drive.
Upcoming program chairpersons are Pat Freeman (July 28), Bill Clarahan (August 4), Doug Campbell (August 11) and Doug Achterhof (August 18).
Club news
The club expressed condolences to Doug Achterhof and his family following the death of his sister.
The club said goodbye to current Rotary exchange student Pam Diaz. She has returned to Ecuador. She was hosted this past year by the Bill Kinneer, Noah Kemp and Steve Berger families.
Upcoming dates to remember - Board meeting, August 4 at 11:15 a.m.; Employer-employee dinner, October 13; District Governor visit, October 27.
