The annual Fourth of July celebration in Wellman is still on for now.
On Monday night, members of the Wellman City Council discussed the event and whether it should be canceled.
“At this point, it’s just kind of a wait game,” City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said. “Even in the 77 counties that are open, not everything is open.
“I would say it’s all going to depend on what (the governor) keeps opening up as things keep moving and what she says about large gatherings.”
Litwiller pointed out that Cedar Rapids has already canceled its Freedom Festival and Wapello County announced that its county fair is canceled.
Council Member Mark Philpot added that Independence has canceled its Fourth of July celebration.
Litwiller said that Wellman’s celebration does not involve a large amount of advance planning other than having to put deposits on some rental items.
“The fireworks we already know they can be returned if they need to be,” she said. “There isn’t a lot we need to do ahead of time that far in advance. I don’t know that we need to make that call.”
