Wolves take down Lady Lions in round one of playoffs

The tournament trail kicked off on the road for the Lady Lions and their tango partner for the first round of the playoffs was against a familiar foe, the Winfield-Mt Union Wolves.  

Unfortunately for Lone Tree, this 1A postseason battle between Lions and Wolves went the way of the home team, as the Wolves picked up a 3-1 victory (25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 25-10) to end Lone Tree’s season on Oct. 21. 

These two teams, who reside in the same conference, have battled many times before and the Wolves have historically gotten the better of Lone Tree. In the midst of a 15-game winning streak against Lone Tree, the Wolves have an overall series record of 32-2 over the Lady Lions. 

With the win W-MU advanced to a second-round matchup where they faced off against Holy Trinity Catholic on Oct. 23. 

Against Lone Tree, the Wolves were led by junior Kellee Milks, ending her night with a team high 19 kills. Other stat leaders for W-MU were Madisen Kellogg in assists (38) and Josie Nelson in digs (27). 

Similar to the regular season, Lone Tree was led by its seniors in round one of the playoffs. Cate Sexton led in kills (7), Hayden Yoder led in assists (16), and Alex Dautremont led in digs (15).   

With their season ending in the first round of the postseason, Lone Tree finishes the year with an 8-18 record, the most wins for the program since 2016. 

Lone Tree heads into the offseason and they say goodbye to their senior class of Sexton, Yoder, Dautremont, Rylee Shield, Avery Morarie, Haley Bockelman, Sami Branson, and Madison Floyd.
