The success of the City of Kalona’s Student-Built house projects in 2022 and 2023 have made a third one possible in 2024. The City purchased the property at 502 A Avenue for this purpose earlier this year; on Thursday, Dec. 7, the existing house was demolished to make way for a duplex to be constructed by local students in Summer 2024. (The house, built in 1900, was not a candidate for rehabilitation.) The student-built homes provide low-to-moderate income homeownership in addition to providing students with paid, hands-on experience in the trades.
