WASHINGTON
In a unanimous vote Tuesday, Washington County supervisors approved a proclamation setting April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month for the county, joining the annual national move to raise awareness of a serious nationwide problem.
Prior to the vote, the board learned that reported abuse in the county averages about 45 cases annually and that a number of community organizations have partnered to aid with fundraising to raise awareness of the issue and prevention efforts.
A key part of the proclamation noted, “Protective factors are conditions that reduce or eliminate risk and provide the social, emotional and developmental well-being of children and whereas effective child abuse prevention activities succeed because of the partnerships created between child welfare professionals, education, health, community and faith-based organizations, businesses, law enforcement agencies and families,” which benefit the communities themselves.
The board also was shown the 2024 T-shirt promoting abuse prevention efforts.
