Development underway at Southtown Recreational Area
Water access is part of the package for visitors to the Southtown Recreational Area; the lake is stocked with game fishes and swimming is permitted near the sandy beach area. Because the adjacent land had been organically farmed, agricultural runoff is not a concern; testing indicates safe water quality.

A gravel parking lot off of 133rd St. at the entrance to Kalona’s SouthTown subdivision is your entry to the miles of trails that cover the 95 acres of recreational land the city took ownership of in March 2023. A trailhead, including restrooms, a dog park, and ADA inclusive playground equipment will be built early 2024 on the land to the left of the trail pictured.

The City of Kalona plans to pave the existing trail in sections. A walk through the wooded, rolling terrain is refreshing at any time of year, but especially beautiful in fall. The city hopes to eventually establish a trail connecting the Southtown Recreational Area with Kalona City Park.
