WELLMAN
When the sweep was completed Thursday night, Mid-Prairie’s volleyball players jumped into a crazy celebration.
Call it a sweep because after the Golden Hawks dropped the first game against 13th-ranked West Liberty, they swept through the next three games for a historic 3-1 victory over the Comets.
Mid-Prairie had not defeated West Liberty since 2009, a stretch of 27 consecutive losses that had included two in 2022 and a season-ending loss in 2021.
Jovi Evans, a sophomore, smashed a team-high 16 kills and junior Callie Huber added 12 kills and 5 blocks.
The Golden Hawks (8-2) dropped the first game, 25-23, then won the next three games by 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21 scores.
Avery Helmuth, a sophomore, led Mid-Prairie with 25 assists and junior Dakota Mitchell had 24 defensive digs.
Helmuth and Harper Pacha each had 4 of Mid-Prairie’s 13 service aces.
