RIVERSIDE

Three new Highland School Board members took their oaths at an organizational meeting held Nov. 27 at Highland High School.

Joining the board in four-year terms are John O’Leary, Joslin Schott and Karen Fink.

While those three joined the board, outgoing members Michael Golden and Josh Thomann thanked the Board. Golden had served for 12 years before choosing not to run for re-election this year.

“Onward and upward, all the new School Board members,” said Golden, who said he enjoyed serving on a board that worked so well on common issues. “So rare that there’s a divide.”

“It was a good learning experience,” Thomann said.

O’Leary, the son of Highland Elementary Principal Jane O’Leary, was elected in the Nov. 7 election to serve District 2. Fink, the wife of Highland Activities Director Jody Fink, was elected in an at-large seat. Schott, a resident of southern Johnson County, was elected in District 6.

Dan Ruth was re-elected in District 4 and Nate Robinson was re-elected in District 5.

Also serving on the Board, but not up for election this year, are Rachel Longbine, District 1, and Monica Jepson, District 3.

2024 Officers

Nate Robinson was re-elected by members of the Board as School Board President. Monica Jepson was voted in as Vice President.

Sue Rich was also re-installed as Board Secretary/Treasurer.

The new board also voted to retain monthly meetings at 5 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

Robinson, Jepson and Longbine accepted assignments on the Finance & Personnel (Negotiations) Committee, and new members Schott and O’Leary are joining Ruth on the Buildings Committee. Schott will represent Highland on the Johnson County Conference Board and Ruth is on the Washington County Conference Board.

Official paper

The News was re-appointed as the official publication of the Highland School District.

Board Action

The Board approved a resolution to post bids for the removal of the old bleachers at Highland Elementary School.

The Board approved Ahlers Cooney Attorneys of Des Moines, with Brett M. Nitzschke as lead attorney, as legal counsel.

Next board meeting: The board will hold its next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. December 11.
