Huskies compete at Marion tournament, Roling places second

Weekend tournament action awaited the Highland girls wrestling team, as the Huskies went on the roadåto compete in the Marion Tournament on Dec. 9

This tourney featured 23 schools. Taking first place with a team score of 366 was Prairie, Cedar Rapids. Mount Vernon and West Liberty placed second and third with teams scores of 327 and 277 respectively. 

Just missing out on a top ten finish, Highland ended the tourney with 127 points to place 11th in the team rankings. 

Continuing her strong start to the season, Angelina Roling was Highland’s top finisher at this tourney. Winning four of her five matches, Roling placed second in the 110 lbs. bracket. 

Roling won her first match by fall in 2:21, her second match by fall in 1:34, and her third match by fall in 2:31. In her semifinal match, against Marion’s Cadence Pastor, it took extra time to decide a winner, but Roling emerged victorious by virtue of an overtime decision, 8-5. 

With first place on the line Mount Vernon’s Kiersten Swart defeated Roling by fall in 1:02. Roling’s three wins by fall gave Highland 42 team points and her record on the season is now at 18-3.

Highland’s next top finish belonged to Lilly Barre. Barre won three matches en route to a fourth place finish in the 120 lbs bracket. 

Starting the tournament with a series of consecutive pins, Barre won her first three matches by fall, the first in 50 seconds, the second in 1:08, and the third in 21 seconds. In her fourth match she was defeated by fall in 1:27 against Tipton’s Saidee Hamilton. 

In the third place match Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Amiyah Burdine defeated Barre by fall in 1:29. Barre’s three wins by fall gave Highland 33 team points and her record on the season now sits at 20-6. 

Ending the tourney with a fourth place finish in the 190 lbs bracket was freshman Chloe Sexton. Wrestling in four matches, Sexton won one match by fall in 4:37. In her third place match she was defeated by Clear Creek-Amana’s Jordan Hunt by fall in 1:39.
