Betty Jeanine Engel was born September 26, 1943, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Robert and Oretha (Rasmussen) Westlund. She was raised in Kewanee, Illinois, where she graduated from Kewanee High School and Moline Institute of Commerce in computer processing. After graduation Betty started working at Alcoa Aluminum in the computer department and was the receptionist for their Davenport Office.
On Valentines Day in 1970 Betty was united in marriage to the love of her life, Dale Engel. After he graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College, Dale became an instructor at Palmer. After teaching for some time they bought a chiropractic office in Clarion, Iowa, where Betty worked for Dale. Practicing in Clarion for several years they sold the practice and moved to Agency, Iowa, where they opened another chiropractic office. They owned and operated the Agency office for many years, until selling it and moving to Kalona.
Betty became a shift manager at Pearson (NCS at that time) where she managed 80 people on the third shift for several years. She also managed a dental office before buying a health and supplement store in Kalona called Foods Naturally. They sold Foods Naturally in 2006 and retired.
Betty passed away Monday, November 2, 2026 at Pleasantview Home at the age of 83 years.
She enjoyed cooking, hosting parties, entertaining in her home, visiting with her friends and family and her fur babies: Togle, Emie, Mandy, Cassie and Christi.
Betty is survived by brother-in-law: Arvon (Bonnie) Engel of Colorado; sister-in-law: Sharon May of Omaha; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale on October 3, 2023 and brother Bobby Westlund.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time with Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Paws & More in Washington.
