Brian James Sexton, 63, of Iowa City, died surrounded by his family Friday, August 7, 2026. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brian Sexton Memorial Fund or you could just finish that project car you have been working on.
Brian was born May 9, 1963, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Louis and Viola (Blum) Sexton. He graduated from Lone Tree High School Class of 1981 and started Sexton Auto Body in 1986 and was still working on cars until the end.
Brian enjoyed working on and restoring classic and muscle cars. A lifelong problem-solver and jack of all trades, he had a natural curiosity about how things worked and could figure out how to build, fix, or fabricate just about anything.
Many people knew Brian from his years stock car racing, a part of his life that brought him many friendships and memories. He especially enjoyed attending car shows, where he could point out vehicles he had painted or worked on throughout his more than 45 years in the auto body business.
Brian was always willing to lend his knowledge and skills to anyone who needed a hand, whether helping with a project, fixing something that was broken, or working through a problem. Though he was known for his gruff exterior, he had a generous and caring nature and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. Above all, Brian’s greatest pride was his children and grandchildren, and he loved watching them pursue their own interests.
Brian is survived by the love of his life: Vicki Colton of Lone Tree; three children: Nickolas (Tanya Klein) Sexton of Riverside, Alex Sexton of Iowa City, and Lacey (Chase) Stutzman of Wellman; three grandchildren: Lucas Sexton, Olivia Sexton and Scout Stutzman; and four brothers: Jerry (Patricia) Sexton, Richard (Trisha) Sexton, Allan (Catherine) Sexton, and Tommy (Leanne) Sexton.
