The medical accessories company that began with a downtown Kalona storefront more than 40 years ago plans to vacate its current facility at 102 1st Street and list it for sale in the next couple of years.

CIVCO Medical Solutions, a leading manufacturer of ultrasound infection control, high-level disinfection, and needle guidance devices, announced March 21 that it will move into a new combined corporate and manufacturing facility in the Iowa City/Coralville area, with estimated occupancy in 2025.

CIVCO’s current corporate headquarters is on Jones Boulevard in Coralville and its main manufacturing facility is in Kalona.

According to their press release, “The consolidated facility will allow for CIVCO’s continued growth in operational and corporate hiring as the company develops and commercializes new medical device products that advance the safety of ultrasound.”

“We are excited to bring our manufacturing and corporate functions together under one roof in Coralville,” said Robin Therme, CIVCO President.  “These changes will allow for improved logistics and capabilities, while also supporting our current growth and what we anticipate in the future.”

Marketing Director Erin Dougherty told The News that CIVCO is in final negotiations on the location in the Coralville/Iowa City area.  The corporation plans to completely vacate their current facility in Kalona once the new building is complete, and the 1st Street building will then be listed for sale.

The corporation has no expectation for layoffs and hopes to retain all Kalona-based employees as their positions are relocated to Iowa City/Coralville.  Close to 100 people work at the Kalona facility.

When asked for comment on CIVCO’s plans, Kalona Chamber of Commerce Director Tonia Poole said, “It’s sad to see them leave their hometown.”

CIVCO was founded in 1981 by Victor J. Wedel, an ultrasound technician at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics who developed the first real-time needle guide.  Initially located in the downtown Kalona storefront now occupied by Willow Creek Quilting & Gifts, the company moved to its present location in Kalona in 1992.

The Kalona headquarters was expanded by tens of thousands of square feet over the decades to accommodate growth.  In 2011, CIVCO opened a new corporate headquarters in Coralville, which was then expanded to double size in 2018.
