Finish Line Technology: security cameras and services for home and farm

(This story was published in The News on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023.)

It is never a bad idea to be safe.

Finish Line Technology based in Wellman gives your home exactly that, safety.

Owned and operated by Jeff Miller, Finish Line Technology mainly functions as a home security installation company, though he does offer other services like data wiring for phone and internet, some electrical work, and wiring TV and internet antennas.

Miller’s main focus is security.

“The main thing is keeping residents safe,” Miller said. “The biggest benefit is to know that your house or business is secure at all times. For what they cost anymore, it’s pretty cheap to get a new system. [It] keeps everyone safe and [you] have a secure place at home if you’re gone.”

Miller opened Finish Line Technology in 2019 after seeing a need in the market while having plenty of experience from his 21 years of related work. Miller believes security cameras will be more common in the future.

“A lot of people are getting more security cameras, even in your smaller communities where you think are safe,” Miller said. “Even new construction, they’re at least wiring the house for security cameras. Usually, you wire for internet and all that stuff. But now I see, they’re starting to wire for if they want to get security cameras [in the future].”

Miller believes what he offers is much better than a “big box store” because of the more personal nature of the business. There is no guarantee, but if an interested customer called today, Miller could potentially be out that same day to whip up a quote.

“I’d be there if they had any problems, being a local person. [With] big box stores, you just buy the equipment, you’d have to either install it or work through it yourself. With my business, we can help you out,” Miller said. “My biggest thing is customer service. I’m local. I’ll be out there the same day.”

Miller is a dealer of Amcrest’s security cameras, based out of Houston, Texas. He likes this deal as they have good customer support and do not have monthly fees attached. So, after the installation fees, you are free from cost. Miller also feels Amcrest is reliable as he’s yet to have a problem with them.

“Amcrest has been really good for my business,” Miller said. “They’ve been really good, really reliable.”

Miller’s expertise can be applied to more than just homeowners. Farmers might be interested in the security camera world because they can be installed in barns, making it easier for farmers to check on livestock without the need to actually check in person, depending on bad weather and other factors.

Miller’s main customer base is the corridor area (interstate 218 from Cedar Rapids to Mount Pleasant). His furthest customer was in Chicago, however. He remains open to do bigger jobs outside of the corridor when opportunity knocks.

Owning his own company and helping the community  is very fulfilling for Miller.

“I just appreciate that I can help the local communities stay safe,” Miller said. “Even if there are some of those bad people out there, it’s just nice knowing that they have trust in you to secure every place.”
