The Highland school board fired a high school teacher after a closed session at its June 8 meeting.
Industrial arts teacher Brian Haymond had his contract terminated in a 6-1 decision, with Kathy Butler dissenting. Butler declined to comment on her vote after the meeting.
Although the move was not technically a reduction in force, Superintendent Ken Crawford said it would help the district make ends meet going forward.
“It was a difficult decision, enrollment is just not where we want it,” Crawford said in an interview after the meeting.
Enrollment this school year was down by 12 students in the Highland district, according to official numbers announced in October. Crawford said the district still expects enrollment to level off soon.
In addition to teaching industrial arts, Haymond coached the school’s speech program. Crawford said speech would likely continue under another sponsor, while industrial tech courses will be replaced with a mixed bag of agriculture and welding classes.
