Highland Schools score 'High Performing' state grade

Highland Community Schools received a “High Performing” grade from the Iowa Department of Education, Superintendent Spencer Lueders told the School Board at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

The district received a grade of 628.36 out of a possible 900 points, or 69.82%. The state average was 63.28%.

The grades are based on a number of assessments, including science, math, English language arts, attendance and graduation rates.

The district ranked above the state average in all academics except science.

Highland High School ranked “high performing” with a score of 626.69; Highland Middle School and Highland Elementary School ranked “commendable” with scores of 474.97 and 485.79, respectively.

New Bus

Highland Schools will be getting a new bus for activity and athletics trips.

The Board approved a proposal of $82,000 for a 2024 Hoglund used bus with a capacity of 71.

The vehicle replaces a “snub” bus, which was purchased in 2010 and has cost nearly $9,000 in recent repairs.

Instructional Support Hearing

The Board set a public hearing for 5 p.m. Jan. 26 as it considers continued participation in the Iowa Instructional Support Program.

The district’s current authorization in the program expires in June 2026.

Board Action

The Board approved a district at-risk student support plan and a state modified supplement request of $156,761.

The Board approved the job description for Food and Nutrition Director.

The Board approved the appointments of Elementary School associates Tammy O’Leary and Jazmin Acevedo, and the resignation of Cory Quail, physical education teacher.

Next Meeting

The Board will hold its next formal meeting at 5 p.m. February 9. A work session is scheduled for 5 p.m. January 26.
