Kalona turns down RAGRAI host request

Construction at Mid-Prairie poses a challenge for 2024 ride

The Kalona City Council met in regular session Monday night where much of the agenda focused on bike rides in 2024.

Council directed staff to continue to work with the Iowa Gravel Series who plan on hosting a gravel bike ride starting at the Kalona Historical Village on May 4. They estimate between 150-200 riders of all ages will register and participate in the May event. Schlabaugh stated that the city has been working with the Iowa Gravel Series along with the Kalona Chamber of Commerce and the Kalona Historical Village on some of the logistics in anticipation of hosting the event in rural Washington, Johnson and Iowa County. Council directed staff to continue to work on the event and prepare the resolution for street closures closer to the time of the event.

Schlabaugh updated council that the city has received a host town packet from RAGBRAI to determine interest in potentially being an overnight stop July 25, 2024. Staff shared some logistics concerns that if selected by RAGBRAI for a July overnight we’d not be able to have enough greenspace for rider accommodations. To meet the minimum acreage requirements from RAGBRAI staff outlined that we’d need to partner with the Mid-Prairie CSD and due to the school projects at East Elementary and Middle School it would be logistically tough to do. Council expressed support of the RAGBRAI event, and the positive experience Kalona had as a pass-through town in 2018 but ultimately agreed and directed staff to notify RAGBRAI that we would not like to be in the overnight selection pool for 2024.

The council unanimously approved a resolution to waive our right to review a Washington County parcel split of 10 acres for Steve and Jerilyn Rich.

Council was present the 2024 Kalona YMCA membership rates along with a proposal from the YMCA for expanding the 24/7 uses to include the gym. After discussions on the 24/7 usage and proposed monthly access fee council directed staff to set up a time for the YMCA to be in attendance to discuss the proposed access changes.

The final item of business was the approval the renewal of Tequila Grill’s class C retail alcohol license and special class A beer permit with outdoor service.
