The Iowa Department of Management Division of Information Technology announced Oct. 30 that it awarded $148,960,000 as part of the Empower Rural Iowa Broadband Grant program. Thirty-nine broadband provider applications representing 47 Iowa counties received a Notice of Intent to Award (NOIA), including Kalona Cooperative Telephone Co (KCTC), Sharon Telephone Company (STC), and Wellman Cooperative Telephone Association (WCTA).
KCTC will receive $3,120,782.33 to expand fiber into rural Henry County; STC will receive $1,842,400 to extend service into rural Iowa City; and WCTA will receive $2,698,551 to provide service to Iowa County.
This round of grant funds will be used to incentivize broadband infrastructure build out in the newly established Broadband Intervention Zones (BIZ). Through feedback from 55 public meetings in Iowa communities, 96 BIZ zones were created across the state. These are areas deemed to be in the most need for broadband infrastructure expansion.
Funds for this grant round have been allocated from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Capital Projects Fund.
