Lone Tree baseball sees season ended by Pekin after Friday night delay

The Lone Tree baseball team’s season came to an end on Monday, as the Lions lost 12-2 to the hosting Pekin Panthers after the game was suspended Friday night due to lightning.

A leadoff walk got Lone Tree started on the right foot Friday night, but less than ten minutes after first pitch, umpires saw lightning. After an hour and 45 minutes of delays, the umpires and coaches decided to suspend the game on Monday.

When the game resumed, Lone Tree picked up where it left off, producing one of its best offensive nights of the season.

Per head coach Trevor McFarland, the Lions put runners in scoring position and loaded the bases twice against a Pekin squad that the Lions produced just a single hit against when the two sides played in June.

“Truly I feel like we came to play, we had one bad inning, but today was the hardest we’ve played all year long. If these kids were juniors or seniors, that big hit would have come.”

With no seniors on the team, McFarland is excited for the future of the program.

“I just know that these kids are only going to get better. I just have to keep all of them out, keep them wanting to play the game of baseball and support the Lone Tree Lions. If we get these kids back out, I think we’ll be way better next year, we can improve to a 10 or 15 win team.”

Lone Tree finished the year with a 1-21 record. Pekin advanced to play Keota in Tuesday’s second round.
