Scott Powers of Lone Tree, who is accused of killing his father on July 13, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Friday, Aug. 7.

Judge Lars Anderson, who is overseeing the case, set Powers' trial for Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Powers, 52, is accused of killing his father, Richard Powers, 76, on Monday, July 13, at his father’s residence, 217 W. Elm Street in Lone Tree.

According to court records, authorities believe the incident occurred sometime that afternoon.

Law enforcement was later contacted to conduct a welfare check at the residence, where Richard Powers was found dead.

Scott Powers was later located in Cedar Rapids and taken into custody.

He was initially transported to University of Iowa Health Care for treatment before being taken to the Johnson County Jail, where he was charged with first-degree murder.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Powers arrived at a Cedar Rapids residence with blood on him. When someone at the residence asked if he had been involved in a motorcycle accident, Powers allegedly responded, "No. I killed my Dad."

Investigators also learned that Powers had allegedly told someone that he intended to kill his father. Authorities later interviewed Powers about the incident, and court records state that his account was consistent with injuries observed by investigators.

Authorities have not released how Richard Powers was killed or what may have been used in his death, although court records indicate investigators do not believe a firearm was involved.

Scott Powers made his initial court appearance on Wednesday, July 15, on the first-degree murder charge before his arraignment was scheduled.

Powers has also waived his right to a speedy trial. His trial is currently scheduled to begin Jan. 19 at the Johnson County Courthouse.
