LONE TREE

Lone Tree high school English teacher Tanya McCarty hosted an end-of-year speech and drama award show on Saturday, April 6, to award the students who excelled in speech and drama throughout the year.

McCarty handed out awards for the outstanding classmen, awarded medals and certificates for all-state and inducted a new student to her patented 200-point club.

The 200-point club is an exclusive club for students who earned over 200 points throughout their high school speech and drama career. Students earn points as they participate in events and get all-state nominations.

The lucky few who earn 200-plus points get their name hoisted on the 200-point club plaque. Joining the club this year was senior Katie McCarty, Tanya’s daughter. Tanya McCarty assured that more students are well on their way to join the club in the future.

Additionally, students performed different acts for a crowd of parents and students. They began with an all-state nomination for a reader’s theatre, called “Lest we forget,” arranged by Tanya McCarty and featuring Alex Dautremont, Maddi Floyd, Cate Sexton, Avery Lisk, Rylie Viers and Hayden Yoder.

Junior Alex Dautremont then performed an expository address titled “Pitch perfect.”

Following was an all-state performance from Katie McCarty, a solo mime.

Senior William Rockafellow played his short film entitled “Voices outside.” The short film featured Rockafellow, Sami Branson, Vaughn Judge, Seth Kunkel, Avery Lisk and Weston Waldschmidt.

Later on, the two improvisational teams combined for one large performance where they enacted a teacher working with an uninterested class. The two teams were made up of Lukas Fuhrmeister, Dominic Graap, Vaughn Judge, William Rockafellow, West Waldschmidt and Cade Wiloz.

The final performance of the night came in the form of a choral reading entitled “Not all superheroes wear capes.” This choral reading was written by Tanya McCarty and was an impactful performance about what it is like to be a teacher. It featured Alex Dautremont, Maddi Floyd, Lukas Fuhrmeister, Isabelle Eagle, Katie McCarty, Jazmine Nino, Cate Sexton, Cade Wiloz, Rylie Viers and Hayden Yoder.

In terms of awards, outstanding freshman was Rylie Viers; outstanding sophomore was Cade Wiloz; outstanding junior was Alex Dautremont; and outstanding senior was Katie McCarty.

The Speech and Drama Spirit Award also went to Katie McCarty.

The Lone Tree speech and drama department is saying goodbye to seven seniors: Mia Bauwens, Alexa Campbell, Dominic Graap, Avery Lisk, Katie McCarty, William Rockafellow and Weston Waldschmidt.
