The Kalona Fall Festival returns this week, and one of its scheduled events is a presentation about conscientious objectors.

Dr. Tom Meyers and Dr. Nyle Kauffmann will lead the presentation, which will focus on conscientious-objector status and the experiences of Amish and Mennonite men during wartime.

Meyers will discuss the history of conscientious-objector status as an alternative to military service for Amish and Mennonites. Conscientious objectors opposed military service because of their religious or moral beliefs.

Dr. Nyle Kauffmann will share stories of area men who held conscientious-objector status during World War I and World War II.

The hourlong presentation will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the entertainment tent at the Kalona Historical Village.

For more information, contact the Mennonite Historical Society of Iowa at 319-656-3271.
