Getting retribution for an earlier season loss, the Raven girls played a close contest in front of their home crowd, defeating the Wapello Arrows, 39-34, on Jan. 30.

It had been a while since Hillcrest defeated the Arrows. The Ravens last victory over Wapello came in 2015. Coming into this game Wapello had a 15-game winning streak over Hillcrest, but now that streak is no more.

This win breaks a six-game losing streak for Hillcrest and it was their third Southeast Iowa Super Conference win of the season. For Wapello this loss brings its record to 6-15 and lowers its conference record to 5-11.

After a first quarter that saw the Ravens take a 14-7 lead, every subsequent quarter had a point difference of one or two points. Hillcrest went into halftime with an eight-point advantage.

Wapello won the third and fourth quarter, but they only did so by a score of second half score of 18-15, not enough to mount a comeback.

As she has done many times this season, sophomore Claire Withrow led Hillcrest in points with 18. She also recorded five rebounds with Delaney Shaw leading the team with nine boards.

Hillcrest 60, New London 39

Competing in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout, the Ravens defeated the New London Tigers at Louisa-Muscatine on Feb. 1.

The Ravens scored 20 points in the first and second quarter to go up big into halftime. This game was never in doubt for Hillcrest as they eventually won by 21 points. The 60 points the Ravens scored is the most they have put up all season long.

Leading Hillcrest with her best offensive performance of the season was junior Malia Yoder.

Yoder scored a season high 28 in the win while also collecting 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Claire Withrow was another Raven to score in the double digits with 12 points. Niva Helmuth pulled down a team high 16 rebounds.

Up next for Hillcrest (6-14) is a road postseason matchup against the WACO Warriors (11-9) on Feb. 8. This will be the third time these two teams will face off against each other, with WACO winning the previous two contests during the regular season.
