The Riverside City Council approved the five-year contract with Johnson County Refuse, which will utilize bright blue and yellow bins at each residence.
The bins will be delivered by the end of the month and collection with the new bins will begin in December. Instructions will be delivered with the new bins. The bins can be lifted into garbage trucks with an automatic arm.
Johnson County Refuse currently provides garbage service for Riverside residents. Residents have to buy stickers that are placed on bags left curbside.
Company owner Steve Smith said that rising worker compensation costs has pushed the use of automated trucks.
The bins are similar to those used in Kalona currently.
Residents can choose between two sizes of bins – 65-gallon and 35-gallon.
Residents will be charged $17.50 per month for 35-gallon bins and $19.50 per month for the 65-gallon bins. There is no extra fee for the bins.
There will be separate bins for garbage and recycling. Smith said that with the new bins, recycling materials will not have to be separated. Garbage pickup will continue to be on Mondays.
“Anybody putting out two bags per week with stickers, they are saving,” City Clerk Becky LaRoche said.
