Crash near Riverside leaves two hospitalized

Last Wednesday, a two-vehicle crash on Highway 22 near Riverside sent two people to the hospital.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:19 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Thomas Fay of Riverside was driving a 2018 GMC Canyon westbound on Highway 22, while Julie Luchman of Iowa City was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V.

Authorities said both vehicles were approaching the Commercial Drive intersection near Riverside when Luchman attempted to make a left turn onto Commercial Drive. She entered the path of Fay's pickup, resulting in a head-on collision.

Washington County Ambulance responded to the scene and treated both drivers before transporting them to University of Iowa Health Care.

After deputies arrived at the scene, Luchman was cited by the Washington County Sheriff's Office for failure to yield while making a left turn.

Assisting at the scene were the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Washington County Ambulance, the Kalona Fire Department and the Riverside Fire Department.
