Wellman man Larry Smith has pleaded guilty to multiple charges and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Smith, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of a controlled substance violation, both Class C felonies; one count of dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, a Class D felony; and three counts of possession of a controlled substance, all aggravated misdemeanors. The remaining charges were dismissed.

The case dates back to February 2025, when authorities responded to Casey’s in Wellman after Smith was reportedly found unresponsive inside a vehicle that had been running for several hours.

According to court records, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of multiple knives, a firearm and controlled substances.

Smith was originally charged with 15 offenses, including multiple felonies, five counts of possession of a controlled substance, three counts of carrying weapons while ineligible, possession of a dangerous weapon while under the influence and several other charges.

During a pretrial hearing on Friday, July 31, Smith indicated that he planned to plead guilty. He appeared for a plea hearing on August 14 and was sentenced on September 11.

In addition to the prison sentence, Smith was ordered to pay $4,610 in fines.
