Hwy 1 to Iowa City: still 55 mph

Posted

Washington County

Although Iowa's new law increasing the speed limit on many rural two-lane highways from 55 mph to 60 mph took effect July 1, the change does not apply to every road.

According to the Iowa DOT, some highways are still being evaluated before any speed limit changes are made. Factors such as vertical curves, which can reduce visibility and increase crash risks, as well as the presence of slower-moving traffic including bicycles, horses and buggies, are being considered. Those factors are among the reasons Highway 1 between Kalona and Iowa City remains posted at 55 mph.

The Iowa DOT is continuing to review other highways across the state to determine whether they are appropriate for the higher speed limit.

For now, Highway 1 remains at 55 mph, while Highway 22 has been increased to 60 mph.

The DOT said it will continue evaluating roads to determine which highways can safely transition from 55 mph to 60 mph.
