MT. PLEASANT

The weather was finally nice enough to allow certain track and field teams to compete outdoors for the first time this season and the track and field meet at the Mt. Pleasant was an ideal place for the Mid-Prairie girls to make their outdoor debut.

Heading south to battle it out with nine other schools, it ended up being a productive day for gold for the Golden Hawk gals in Panthers Country, as they collected six 1st place finishes at the Mt. Pleasant Invitational on March 28.

The relay teams shined for the Hawks as they were able to sprint past the competition to place first in the 800m and the 1600m relay races.

In the 800m relay the team of Dakota Mitchell, Paige Safly, Jovi Evans, and Emma Lueck took first with a time of 1:55 and in the 1600m relay the quartet of Lueck, Mitchell, Lanee Duwa and Danielle Hostetler grabbed first place with a time of 5:12.

Hostetler also took first place in an individual event, the 1500m. It was a 1, 2 finish for the Hawks in the 1500m as Hostetler won the race in 5:07 and fellow senior Abby Fleming was the runner-up with a time of 5:12.

Mid-Prairie collected another win in a long-distance event when freshman Brooklyn Stutzman was the first to cross the finish line in the 3000m run with a time of 11:05. Also competing in this event was senior Phoebe Shetler who placed 3rd in 11:30.

In the shorter distance runs Evans once again ushered in a strong performance for Mid-Prairie as she snagged two top five finishes.

In the 200m Evans was the runner-up with a time of 27.18 and in the 100m she placed 4th in 13.02. Also competing in the 200m was Mitchell who finished in 28.80 to place 5th.

The field events also produced top finishes for the Hawks. In the long jump Lueck, in a field of 19, was the strongest leaper in attendance as she placed first with her farthest jump being marked at 15-11. Second place belonged to Keokuk Junior Ada Wood with a jump of 15-04.

In the high jump Safly, in a field of 12, tied for first place, clearing the bar at 4-10. The other competitor to tie for first place was Washington sophomore Leighton Messinger.

Other top performances for Mid-Prairie came from Behla Schmidt and Greta Sieren. Siren placed 3rd in the 800m run with a time of 2:29 and Schmidt was the runner-up in the 100m hurdles with a second-place time of 17.23.
