Golden goal lifts Golden Hawks past Comets in OT

WEST LIBERTY

It was a rainy day for soccer and by the time the second half ended the rain picked up considerably, seemingly to match the intensity of a game that needed overtime to decide a winner.

With Mid-Prairie and West Liberty knotted up, the next score won the game.

Not daunted by the wind and the rainfall, Elise Gingerich, off a pass from Zoey Curtiss, scored her second goal of the game to give Mid-Prairie the win, 2-1, on April 1.

With this win Mid-Prairie avoided back-to-back losses to begin the season, improved their season record to 1-1, and their conference record to 1-0.

After getting shut out against Solon, Mid-Prairie entered this conference game hoping to end their scoring drought, but a tough defensive effort held them scoreless in the first half, but the second half is where the fireworks happened.

Halfway through the second half Curtiss sent a through ball past the West Liberty defense and Gingerich, a speedy sophomore, caught up to the pass and sent the ball into the back of the net to give Mid-Prairie a 1-0 lead.

The Comets did not fall quietly. With about 10 minutes left in regulation West Liberty tied the game after scoring a goal after getting multiple opportunities near the goal thanks to a corner kick.

Despite tying the game, West Liberty still fell in OT thanks to the sure foot of Gingerich. After being defeated by Clear Creek Amana, this was West Liberty’s second straight loss, and their record now sits at 1-2.

Solon 6, Mid-Prairie 0

The Golden Hawks began their season with a road loss against the Solon Spartans on March 28.

This victory improved Solon’s record to 2-0, winning their first game of the season against Regina, 3-1. Mid-Prairie is still seeking their first victory over Solon with the Spartans having a 11-0 overall record against the Hawks.

The Spartans scored twice in the first half and then scored four more goals in the second half while also keeping Mid-Prairie from scoring.

Mid-Prairie recorded one shot on goal from junior Zoey Curtiss. Sophomore Niva Helmuth ended the game with 31 saves, a school record.

Mid-Prairie played in their first home game of the season against Central Lee on April 2. Up next for the Golden Hawks (1-1) is a home contest against the Columbus/WMU Wildcats (1-1) on April 4.
